Thanksgiving 2008 recap

A great family day!  We slept in late and had a big pancake breakfast.  Piddled about on the computer and around the house for a couple of hours, then headed out for my annual Thanksgiving morning bike ride.  The Loud Guys were not in attendance today, so I was alone with my thoughts.

It was clear, but chilly so I opted for a quickie lake-loop.  This is one of my favorite short rides or long runs as it covers some quiet roads in some of the most lovely areas around where I live.  The “lake” is a smallish body of water in Far Hills.  It’s surrounded by private property, so there isn’t a lot of development to spoil the views.  It’s a beautiful stretch of road in any season.  Today I noticed that the lake was just starting to ice over:

Thanksgiving 2008 – Bike Ride

I made it around the lake and tried to catch a couple on a tandem as they road back up Far Hills Road, but I just didn’t have the gas.  They were very strong, and I only got within 20 yards of them before the hill topped out and they bombed down the back side into Liberty Corner.

After a quick shower, Weazer & I packed up for the short ride to the shore for Thanksgiving in Seaside Park.  This year Mom decided to have the family celebration at the beach house, and have the whole meal catered.  The drive down the GSP was through some of the worst traffic we have ever seen.  At one point, it took us 30 minutes to go 13 miles.

We finally arrived at the house in time to get a drink, some snacks and take some pictures just as the sun was starting to set:

The pictures of Fran & I are some of the best ever taken.  I’m so grateful that she’s stuck by me all these years!

We had a great meal, with lots of laughs, lots of fine wines and happy kids.  We had an uneventful drive home and went to bed fat, tired and very, very happy!

Evernote

I really wish had a Linux client. I’m starting to store a lot of stuff in Evernote, but working from the website is sort of a drag. They really should have a Linux client!

Friday WTF – Sunday edition

Yeah, I know I promised a new WTF entry every Friday, but I’m lazy and not a bit creative.

So here is a guy with no balls in the literal sense, but monster cajones in the figurative.

Just watching this makes me sore.

Epic party!

It was a total blow-out! Lots of friends arrived that we haven’t seen in a long time. Lauren was the special guest, but others arrived from points far and wide. We all had a great time, ate and drank a ton. So much so that the recycling bucket is full again!

Today I’m spending the day on the recliner. Staying very still and quiet. I’m telling myself it’s a recovery day.

1st attempt at ‘Cross – USGP Cyclocross – Mercer County Park

Just a quickie RR for a quickie race. Up a ‘o-dear-god-it’s-early’ o’clock, drove down to the park. Registered then rode around a bit to try and get warm. Didn’t have any tights, so wore my sweatpants and sweatshirt. Bad idea. Met up with Brian and Jim. 30 min delay. Rode part of the course. Bad idea. Got to the starting line, stood around freezing. Bad idea. Started thinking “WTF am I doing here” Bad idea. Gun goes off, and so do I. Get to the first turn and think “this should be interesting, in the Chinese sense”. Spend the next 35 minutes trying to stay upgright, trying to remember all the stuff I learned from the Cyclocross DVD, mount, dismount and keep moving forward, all while my HR is pinned at redline.

Hit the end of the second lap, just as the leaders are passing me. That ends my race. 38ish min, avg HR 161.

Get to the car, get cleaned up, grab a nasty-ass hotdog from the roach coach, and find a place to shoot some pictures:And also took some video:

Yep Kurt…
Cross Rulz!
