Runnin’ & Freezin’

As overdressed as I was yesterday, I felt under dressed today, probably because I wasn’t wearing a skull cap, and just a regular running hat. It was windy, cold and a couple of snow squalls passed through. Still got almost 14 miles, in 2:19, and felt really good at the end of the run.

I got my stats from the Nike+iPod site, 101.12 miles, avg 9:34 pace since the beginning of the year So far, so good!

Just Brickin’

If it is Saturday, it must be brick day. After nearly a week off nursing a groin/quad strain (oww!) I finally got back out to train. I had planned to ride a quick Mountainville loop with BB and PB. When I got to PB’s house, he informed me that the ride was scheduled for Sunday… Doh! I felt like a real dumbass.

So I call up Hootus and make my way slowly over to his place. We got on the road right at 9:00am. As soon as we left I knew I was overdressed. I wore the heavier tights, long sleeved shirt, jersey & jacket, plus beanie and heavy gloves. After a couple of miles, the beanie had to go. When we got to Kinnelon around 18 miles in, the long sleeved shirt had to go.

When we passed back through Boonton we saw the temps had already hit 56. You can almost, almost, smell spring in the air. The ride came in just a hair under 40 miles, 2:22

Once we got back, I hopped in the car and sprinted over to Giralda Farms for my run. It’s been over 3 years since I ran my 1st 10k there, and I wasn’t sure about the route. So I just ran two loops around the campus, in my bib shorts and short-sleeved jersey, and still worked up a good sweat. SWEET!!

Ended up with a 54 min 5.97 mile run. The workout was only scheduled for a 1:15 bike and :45 run, but it felt really good to go longer, especially with a full week of rest under my belt.

Headin’ home

Vacation 2007 will not be about the swim, bike or run. it WILL be about eatin’, drinkin’ and rollin’ with the homies.

Yep, we are heading Antonio for a long overdue visit home.

Bonus points for arriving around 6:00pm, when we can get dinner at the Taco Cabana just off the airport property.

Lovin’ the long run

It may take me a while to get motivated and get out the door, but once I start moving, I remember how much I really enjoy the long run. The pace is easier than most of my runs, and it gives me time to think and reflect on the week. After the first 15 or 20 minutes, I’m in a groove with the tunes (I always keep my iPod on ‘shuffle mode’), and I can feel my head starting to clear out. At times (like today) the feeling is quite a bit like popping to the surface of a very deep lake. My mood is high, my head clear and I’m cruising along with almost no effort.

Today’s long run was a bit of a “little Billy” run. I wasn’t planning on the route I took, and in fact had intended to go in a different direction. But after the first 30 minutes along a familiar route, I decided to make some changes. I ran down Evergreen into Bernardsville, then headed straight into Little Italy, down Bernards ave and up Liberty onto Pill Hill. After the long downhill, I turned UP Meeker Rd, and finished that brutal climb. Then out to Annin Rd, to Whitenack, and back through Cantebury. If I hadn’t made a wrong turn and had to backtrack a bit, it would have been a PERFECT 1:45 run. As it was, I came in at 1:50:51 and 11.18 miles.

Moving along…

If you got here from www.aknobforbrightness.com, welcome to the new knob.

I’m slowly moving off MT to blogger.com. I love MT and really enjoyed the flexibility that it provided. But the time investment required to get to the good stuff was too high. It’s the 80/20 rule. Blogger gives me 80% of the functionality of MT, but does so with easy to use web-based tools.

Home is where I want to be
Pick me up and turn me round
I feel numb – burn with a weak heart
(So I) guess I must be having fun
The less we say about it the better
Make it up as we go along
Feet on the ground
Head in the sky
It’s ok I know nothing’s wrong . . nothing

Raising the bar..

Everyone who knows me well understands my attraction to a difficult goal. CNE, PMP, ITIL, Marathon, Ironman.

Set ’em up and knock ’em down. So here is the next one:

Dear Candidate Bassett,

This letter serves as your admission document for the CISSP Examination.

Yep. Once again I feel the need to go “all in”….

Have I said how much I hate intervals? On the bike they are bad enough, but running on the treadmill, they suck like a black hole.

Today’s serving of pain was a 60 min run, at 10 min insert 7×3 min Z4 with a 1 min jog. I did the intervals at just over a 7:00/mile, with the 1 min jog at just over a 10:00/mile. The whole festival ended up at just under 9:00/mile. Right at my goal pace for NJM.

I’m a dead man.

Improving financial management

Now that Weazer is unemployed, we are forced into a belt-tightening mode. Not that this will be a real hardship for us, but we have both agreed to see how little we can spend. We are making it a challenge of sorts, cutting back on a lot of unnecessary spending.

Some quick hits were the housecleaner, personal training and weekly manicures. Staying away from Gary’s will be a big help too.

We are also looking at switching to Verizon FIOS service to cut back on Cablevision costs. I have to do some apples-to-apples comparison on this.

One thing we DID continue this year was the Scotts Lawn service. The yard was so much healthier this past year. We figured it was a good investment for 2007.

Back on the road

After being a total slacker since last Saturday, I finally got out for a run today. 2:00/12.4 miles. 1st hour was on the road, doing the normal loop. I had planned to stop back at the house to use the bathroom and head back out for the 2nd hour, but with all the ice and snow on the sidewalks & roads, I was spending too much time too close to traffic. So I hopped on the treadmill and finished the run.

While I was running, I was thinking why my consistency is so bad. Good intentions seem to always end up falling short, then into a week of sloth. Perhaps a touch of bi-polar or something.

I need to make a pact with myself. Only focus on today. Tomorrow will take care of itself.

Speaking of tomorrow, it’s President’s Day and no workee! WooHoo!
