Wrapping up the year

Since I’m not going to do a lengthy Christmas letter to friends this year, this post will have to do.

Training & Racing

I had a pretty good early season this year, with equal loads of good, bad and ugly  I had two great oly races (Colonial Beach and Pittsburgh), a good showing at the Long Branch Sprint, and picked up my 1st bit of hardware at the OddMan 1-3-5.  The high point was at Pittsburgh where my friend Joe and his son got to watch me race.  While I wanted to have a really good race at IMWI, my GI tract turned against me and I ended up with a personal worst time, but learned a lot about myself in the process.

The next few years I’ll focus on running.  I’m not going to have the time for full-on IM training, so I’ll use the time to forge a runner out of this old bod.

Work

Another year as CISO at Pharm R&D, and not a lot of real accomplishments to show.  There have been some quick wins here and there, but all told it was a year of daily routine, mixed with a healthy dose of frustration.  Given the state of the company (3% global workforce reduction) and the overall state of the economy, I think that simply surviving the year is a major accomplishment.  On the other side of my job, I was able to onboard a couple of new groups onto the Synchrony platform, and began evangelizing a new platform for fax-to-email conversion.  This new service (Graphnet) looks to be a big winner for a couple of key groups who are still stuck with inbound and outbound faxing for regulatory submissions.

School

After IMWI I had to immediately switch gears and begin to focus on my MBA.  To say that this was a challenge is like stating an Everest summit is a brisk uphill walk.  After a full 8 week semester , I’m still having a lot of problems getting into an mental state where I can focus on my school work.  While my grades have been ok, I don’t think I’m getting everything out of the experience that I could.  I KNOW I’m not putting in all the effort that I could either.  Part of that is simply the lack of mental and emotional energy due to the heavy load at work

What’s next?

2010 will bring one big milestone:  Fran and I will be celebrating our 25th anniversary!  Ye gads that seems like a long time, but it really has flown by.  We’ve had some rough bits to be sure, but the vast, vast majority of the time we’ve been fabulously happy.  We’re trying to figure out how to celebrate the event.  On the one hand we would like to have a big catered party, but we also want to get away for a long trip together.

Beyond that it looks like another challenging year at work and a full plate of classes through August, when I’ll get a month long break.  As far as racing is concerned I’m looking at the OddMan and a 5k in March, a half-marathon in April.  Beyond that I’ll probably just race and officiate at some local favorite venues, fitting them in around the school schedule.

As for workouts, I managed to get in a 5.25 mile run and upper body weight workout on Friday, and a 2:00 MTB ride on Sunday at Stephens State Park.  I’m really digging the riding at Stephens.  It’s not too terribly technical

, so I’m not walking around stuff, has enough climbing to make me really feel the workout, and always ends with about 15 minutes of gnarly descents, fast flowing twisty flats and a great bomb-run with three good jumps.

I’m really going to try to get to all my workouts this week.  My work schedule seems to be relatively light, so I should have the energy to complete the evening sets (we’ll see how long that lasts).  Friday afternoon is our team’s holiday party.  That should be fun.

End of a long weekend

School, wedding, after-party and football (Cowboys WIN!). A pretty decent may to spend the weekend. Other points of note:

  • Windows 7 install finally completed, data restored and most of my apps reinstalled.
  • Upgraded the blog to WP 2.8.5, including backing up the entire site
  • Got started with Amazon EC2, still need to figure out how to save an instance
  • Put up the Halloween Tigger

One will note that there wasn’t a shred of physical activity involved. I’m going to pay for that tomorrow morning when I’m back into the weights.

Windows7 upgrade nightmare

I finally got Windows7 to install on my home desktop. What a royal pain in the ass. I purchased the Home Pro upgrade via the student discount option, and chose the 64-bit version. This was my first mistake. I received the update notice in my in-box, and was able to successfully download the package. When I ran the “unpackager” tool I ran into an error:

“We are unable to create or save new files in the folder in which this application was downloaded. Please check the folder properties to make sure that you have security
permission on the folder to write files and that the folder is not read-only”.

A quick Google search revealed that this was a common problem with the student upgrade. I followed the instructions for downloading a tool that allowed me to create an ISO file from the install package, burned the ISO to DVD and begin the upgrade.

Because I was moving from 32bit to 64bit, I had to do a clean install. I deleted the old partition (after backing everything up, of course!). I ran the install and it would proceed through the “expanding files” module. At 91%, the system would hang for 30-45 minutes, then fail. I retried this multiple times with the same results.

So now I have a bricked desktop computer. Several hours of Google-fu

, downloads and frustrations, I finally figured out that the DVD image I burned from the Dell desktop was corrupt. After a few more hours of work, I got a procedure to work:

(1) Download the package to a portable hard drive
(2) Run the “unpackaging” tool in a XP session on VirtualBox on my Macbook Pro
(3) Use ocsdimg to create an ISO on the portable hard disk drive in the VirtualBox session
(4) Burn the ISO to DVD using the Disk Utility on the Macbook Pro.
(5) Run the install
(6) Skip the entry of the license key during install, since an upgrade key won’t work for a new install
(7) When the install is complete and all patches are applied, run this process to activate the license.

So the Dell desktop is now successfully upgraded, and I’m working through the slow process of reinstalling all my apps, restoring backups and dealing with incompatibilities (grr.. printer drivers….)
